Somerset Cancer Care is a registered charity, started in 1988 by Dr Jonathan Meads, a GP from Hemyock (now retired) together with breast cancer patient, Barbara Creighton. We now have over 60 volunteers across Somerset, a part-time administrator and a part-time Director, a post which was originally funded by a National Lottery grant.
Our professionally trained volunteers give information, confidential support and free stress-reducing complementary therapies to anyone affected by cancer, patients or their families and carers, from diagnosis onwards, thus complementing the support given by health and social professionals.
We do this through our CAFE (Cancer Aid For Everyone) support groups in Taunton, Minehead, and Wells, by phone support, by attendance at haematology/oncology clinics, through our Headwear Clinic and Patient User Group work.
Somerset Cancer Care also provides an opportunity for anyone affected by cancer to talk to someone outside their family and friends who understands the stress and anxiety that cancer brings.
Our free complementary therapies, such as guided relaxation/visualisation, hand massage, aromatherapy, reflexology and healing can help reduce stress and pain. We aim to improve quality of life and encourage a positive approach and self-help.
Many of our carefully chosen volunteers have experienced cancer themselves or in someone close to them. All are supportive and have a clear understanding of the absolute need for confidentiality.
